Pedestrian crossings often lack automated detection mechanisms, leading to manual delay risks and increased road accidents. This project introduces CrossBuddy AI, an intelligent road crossing safety system designed to automate pedestrian detection, manage traffic lights, and provide instant emergency alerts. Powered by an ESP32 microcontroller, the system integrates a HuskyLens AI vision camera to continuously scan crossing areas for pedestrians.
Upon identifying a person, the system initiates a dynamic signal sequence: transitioning to yellow for two seconds, turning red to stop vehicles, and activating an OLED display countdown alongside an audible buzzer to guide pedestrians safely. For critical situations, an integrated SOS emergency push button instantly forces all traffic lights red, activates local alarms, and dispatches real-time emergency notifications to municipal authorities via a Telegram Bot using Wi-Fi connectivity.
Tested on a physical prototype model featuring dual traffic light arrays and dedicated power modules, CrossBuddy AI effectively bridges AI vision with IoT connectivity. By shifting road safety from manual interaction to automated, real-time intervention, this system provides a scalable, high-efficiency solution for school zones, residential streets, and smart city pedestrian infrastructures.
