SMARTROCKET: A Data-Driven Water Rocket for STEM Learning, Flight Stability and Target Accuracy

SMARTROCKET is a STEM innovation developed to improve the flight stability, consistency and target accuracy of a water rocket through a systematic and data-driven approach. The innovation was developed from challenges encountered during water rocket practices and competitions, such as unstable flight, inaccurate landing, detached fins and inconsistent performance. Instead of relying solely on trial and error, SMARTROCKET applies an engineering design process of Design, Test, Record, Analyse, Improve and Retest.

During test launches, pupils observe and record variables such as water volume, air pressure, launch angle, fin design and alignment, flight stability, distance and landing position. The collected data is analysed to identify problems and guide improvements to the rocket design and launch settings. Through this process, pupils apply scientific concepts including Newton’s Third Law, air pressure, aerodynamics, gravity and projectile motion, while learning to make decisions based on evidence.

The effectiveness of this continuous improvement process is reflected in the project’s three-year competition journey. At the Johor State Level, the project progressed from no placing in 2024, to Third Prize in 2025, and Second Prize in 2026. In the same year, the team also achieved Champion at MRCC Zon Selatan 2026. This progression demonstrates how systematic testing, analysis, reflection and refinement can lead to measurable improvement.

Beyond competition, SMARTROCKET has strong potential as a hands-on STEM learning activity for primary schools. It can help increase pupils’ interest in STEM and strengthen their understanding of Science, particularly the concepts of manipulated, responding and controlled variables. Pupils can conduct fair tests, make predictions, collect and analyse data, draw conclusions and solve problems through authentic experimentation. In the future, SMARTROCKET aims to be developed as an engaging classroom-based STEM activity that connects scientific knowledge, inquiry skills and real-world problem-solving, making Science more meaningful, measurable and exciting for primary school pupils.
