Abstract

Unit conversion involving length, mass and volume is an important topic in the Mathematics syllabus; however, many pupils experience difficulties in remembering conversion units, determining whether to multiply or divide, and performing calculations involving different units. These difficulties may lead to errors in both unit conversion and mathematical operations, consequently affecting pupils’ achievement. Therefore, the STEP Metric Ruler innovation was developed as a practical teaching aid to simplify the process of unit conversion and calculation.

The main objective of this innovation is to reduce pupils’ confusion when converting between measurement units and to enable them to perform unit conversion and mathematical operations simultaneously. The STEP Metric Ruler is designed based on the direction of movement between measurement units. Pupils identify the starting unit and move towards the required unit by adding zeros according to the number of steps between the units. A large empty square is also provided to allow pupils to arrange numbers according to their respective units and perform calculations systematically. For example, pupils can convert 5 metres to centimetres by moving from the metre unit to the centimetre unit and obtaining 500 centimetres without having to recall whether multiplication or division is required.

The innovation can also be applied to calculation problems involving different units, particularly mass. Pupils can arrange values according to their units, convert them when necessary, and complete addition or subtraction accurately. The STEP Metric Ruler is portable and can be used during classroom activities as well as a teaching aid by teachers. In addition, a QR code provides access to the innovation so that pupils can practise at home with parental guidance. Continuous use of the STEP Metric Ruler is expected to strengthen pupils’ understanding and retention of unit conversion concepts while improving their accuracy in calculations involving measurement units.
