Digestive Quest: A Gamified Approach to Learning the Human Digestive System Using
Scratch
This project introduces Digestive Quest, a gamified learning experience developed
using Scratch to enhance students’ understanding of the Human Digestive System. Traditional
teaching methods often rely on passive learning, which may limit engagement and conceptual
understanding. This project aims to transform learning into an interactive and student-centred
process. The project was implemented with Form 2 students, who collaboratively designed and
developed an educational game. The process included planning the storyline, constructing
questions based on the syllabus, designing sprites and backgrounds to represent digestive
organs, and programming animations using Scratch. Variables were used to represent different
classes of food such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. The developed game can be accessed at: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/1291364028. The results showed increased student engagement and improved understanding of digestion concepts, particularly in identifying organ functions and food breakdown. Students also developed problem-solving and computational thinking skills.
In conclusion, Digestive Quest demonstrates that gamification and hands-on learning can make
complex scientific concepts more engaging, meaningful, and easier to understand.
