AI BabySafe: An Artificial Intelligence-Based Baby Safety Risk Detection and Real-Time Alert System

 

Abstract

Baby safety remains a significant concern for parents, caregivers, childcare centres, and healthcare institutions due to the increasing risk of preventable accidents such as suffocation, falls, unsafe sleeping positions, and unattended emergencies. Conventional monitoring systems, including Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) and standard baby monitors, rely on continuous human observation and are unable to automatically detect hazardous situations. AI BabySafe is an innovative intelligent baby safety monitoring system that integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI), Computer Vision, Internet of Things (IoT), and real-time mobile notifications to provide proactive risk detection and early intervention. The system employs AI-powered image recognition, pose estimation, and motion detection algorithms to analyse live video streams without requiring wearable sensors on the infant. AI BabySafe is capable of detecting multiple high-risk situations, including prolonged prone sleeping, facial obstruction by pillows or blankets, movement towards bed edges indicating fall risk, prolonged crying, unusual inactivity, and unauthorised entry into the baby's monitoring area. Once a potential hazard is detected, the system instantly sends alerts to parents or caregivers through a dedicated mobile application, enabling immediate action to prevent accidents. Compared with conventional baby monitoring devices, AI BabySafe provides intelligent decision-making rather than passive surveillance, making it a more effective solution for enhancing infant safety. The system is designed for application in homes, childcare centres, nurseries, hospitals, and neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), offering a non-invasive, user-friendly, and scalable solution with strong commercialisation potential through smart devices, mobile applications, and institutional licensing. By integrating advanced AI technologies into early childcare safety, AI BabySafe contributes to reducing preventable infant injuries, improving caregiving efficiency, and promoting safer environments for babies and young children.
