Smart Leaf Station is an innovative and eco-friendly system developed to address the growing problem of dry leaf waste in schools, parks, residential areas, and public spaces. Dry leaves are commonly collected manually and disposed of through open burning or landfill, contributing to air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and unnecessary waste. The problem is further increased when leaves are mixed with stones, plastic bottles, twigs, and other debris, making collection and sorting time-consuming and labour-intensive.Smart Leaf Station provides a systematic solution by integrating several processes into one system. It is designed to collect dry leaves, separate unwanted materials using air-based separation, grind the leaves, weigh the collected material, and prepare it for conversion into compost, mulch, or organic fertiliser. The innovation also introduces a reward-based “Leaf Points” system to encourage students and community members to participate actively in proper leaf collection and recycling. The prototype was developed in-house by students and their teacher mentor using recycled cardboard and readily available materials. The concept was designed, constructed, tested, and improved based on observations and feedback. With its simple, user-friendly, and low-cost design, Smart Leaf Station has strong potential for implementation in schools, parks, residential communities, universities, government institutions, and municipal areas.Overall, Smart Leaf Station transforms dry leaves from waste into a valuable organic resource while reducing manual effort, landfill dependency, and open burning. It promotes environmental awareness, community participation, sustainable waste management, and circular economy practices, contributing towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.
