ABSTRACT

SAGA SEITO: Interactive Japanese Language Learning Application

The Japanese language is recognized as one of the most challenging languages to master, particularly due to its complex writing systems, vocabulary, and grammatical structures. In Malaysia, the Ministry of Education (KPM) has introduced Japanese language education in Fully Residential Schools (Sekolah Berasrama Penuh, SBP) to equip students with valuable global communication skills and enhance future career opportunities. However, students often face difficulties in learning Japanese due to limited access to interactive learning resources, resulting in a lack of motivation, learning direction, and opportunities for continuous practice.

To address this issue, students from Sekolah Menengah Sains Datuk Setia Abdul Ghani Ali developed SAGA SEITO, a web-based interactive Japanese language learning application designed to provide a structured, engaging, and student-centred learning experience. Fully aligned with the Malaysian KSSM Japanese Language curriculum, the application integrates concise learning notes, dynamic vocabulary cards, interactive quizzes, and a mastery-based progression system. Students are required to achieve a minimum score of 80% in chapter quizzes before unlocking subsequent learning modules, ensuring that foundational knowledge is mastered before progressing to more advanced content. In addition, a gamification element featuring a national SBP leaderboard allows students to earn points and compare their achievements with peers from other SBP schools, encouraging healthy competition and sustained engagement.

SAGA SEITO transforms Japanese language learning from a challenging and resource-limited process into an interactive, structured, and rewarding digital learning journey. By integrating curriculum-aligned content, mastery-based learning, and gamification, the application has the potential to bridge existing learning resource gaps, increase student engagement, and empower SBP students to develop Japanese language proficiency and global communication skills through technology.
