Abstract

Vehicular over-speeding in sensitive pedestrian areas—such as school zones, residential communities, and construction sites—poses a critical safety threat. This project introduces a Smart Speed Alert System, an IoT-enabled speed detection framework designed for real-time traffic monitoring and automated over-speeding enforcement. Controlled by an ESP32 microcontroller, the system calculates vehicle velocity using dual infrared (IR) sensors positioned at a fixed distance (100cm) by recording the time elapsed between trigger points.

The system processes the calculated speed and instantly displays the reading alongside the active threshold limit on a 16 times I2C LCD screen. When a vehicle exceeds the pre-configured speed limit, the ESP32 activates a local alert system featuring a warning buzzer and indicator LEDs (Red, Yellow, Green status). Simultaneously, using integrated Wi-Fi connectivity, the system dispatches an instant over-speed notification—including vehicle speed, limit status, location, and timestamp—to monitoring personnel via a Telegram Bot.

Compact, reliable, and cost-effective, this prototype provides an automated, dynamic solution to enforce speed compliance and improve pedestrian safety in high-risk zones.
