Understanding the tumour microenvironment (TME) is crucial in grasping the complexity of cancer biology, particularly the dynamic interactions between cancer cells, immune responses, stromal components and the extracellular matrix. These interconnected elements form a highly adaptive and heterogeneous environment that significantly influences tumour progression, metastasis and treatment response. However, teaching such intricate biological systems can be challenging, especially when students struggle to visualise and contextualise these micro-scale interactions. This project introduces an innovative educational approach by leveraging Minecraft to simulate and construct interactive 3D models of the TME. The objective is to enhance student engagement and conceptual comprehension through active learning, digital design and immersive problem-solving. Within a custom-built Minecraft world, students are guided to recreate key elements of the TME, including tumour cells, immune infiltrates, blood vessels, fibroblasts and hypoxic zones, using creatively assigned blocks and structured building missions. By visualising spatial organisation, simulating cellular behaviour and exploring mechanisms such as angiogenesis, immune evasion and tumour-stroma crosstalk, students gain a deeper appreciation of the biological complexity involved. This approach not only fosters scientific literacy but also encourages collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. The activity is evaluated through students' presentations, self-assessments and reflective discussions. Overall, this project highlights the transformative potential of game-based learning in biomedical education. Integrating virtual simulations like Minecraft into cancer biology teaching offers an engaging and interdisciplinary pathway that bridges scientific knowledge with student-centred exploratory experiences.
