DIGITAL DIC: A Bilingual Digital Dictionary and Gamified Learning Tool for Nursing Students

Medical terminology is an essential component of nursing education; however, nursing students often experience difficulties understanding, remembering, and applying unfamiliar medical terms, particularly when English is not their first language. To address this challenge, DIGITAL DIC (Digital Dictionary) was developed as an innovative, bilingual, and accessible digital learning tool specifically designed for nursing students.

DIGITAL DIC integrates a nursing-focused medical terminology dictionary with interactive learning activities to support independent and engaging learning. The application provides English medical terms with Bahasa Melayu explanations, A–Z alphabetical navigation, keyword search, phonetic pronunciation, and responsive access through smartphones and computers. To enhance engagement beyond conventional dictionary use, DIGITAL DIC is integrated with gamified activities including interactive flashcards, card matching, and challenge quizzes, supported by scores, timers, progress indicators, immediate feedback, and achievement badges.

The innovation provides a continuous learning pathway: search a term, understand its meaning, practise through interactive activities, and receive immediate feedback. By combining bilingual terminology support, digital accessibility, and gamification in a nursing-specific platform, DIGITAL DIC transforms medical terminology learning from a conventional reference-based activity into a more interactive and learner-centred experience.

DIGITAL DIC has the potential to enhance students’ confidence, engagement, and understanding of medical terminology while supporting flexible learning anytime and anywhere. This innovation demonstrates how simple digital technology can be strategically integrated into nursing education to create a more accessible, engaging, and meaningful learning experience.
